Surya (Sun) Puja
The Surya Puja is a traditional Vedic ritual for the Sun, performed in your name with a sankalpa from your birth details, Surya mantra japa and the offerings associated with the Sun. In Vedic astrology the Sun is linked with confidence, authority, vitality, your relationship with your father and dealings with government or senior people, so this puja is usually considered when the Sun is under pressure in your chart.

When is a Surya Puja considered?
A Surya Puja is usually considered when your birth chart, current Dasha or a transit shows the Sun under strain. Common indications include:
- The Sun is debilitated in Libra or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house
- The Sun is closely joined by Rahu, Ketu or Saturn
- You are running a Surya Mahadasha or Antardasha that feels draining
Arjun checks your chart first, because the same placement can be strong or weak depending on the rest of the chart. If a puja isn’t needed, he’ll tell you.
Surya at a glance
Surya’s traditional day is Sunday, its presiding deity is Lord Surya, and its beej mantra is “Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah”. These are the classical associations a Surya Puja draws on:
| Graha | Surya (Sun) |
|---|---|
| Day | Sunday |
| Presiding deity | Lord Surya |
| Beej mantra | Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah |
| Traditional japa count | 7,000 recitations |
| Colour | Orange and red |
| Traditional offerings (daan) | Wheat, jaggery, copper and red cloth |
| Associated gemstone | Ruby (Manik); wear only on personal advice |
How is the Surya Puja performed?
The puja is performed on your behalf, usually on Sunday at sunrise, so you don’t need to be present.
- Sankalpa: your full name, date, time and place of birth are used to set the ritual intention.
- Invocation: Lord Ganesha is invoked first, followed by Lord Surya.
- Mantra japa: the Surya beej mantra is recited by the priests.
- Havan and offerings: a fire ritual with the traditional samagri and daan for the Sun.
- Confirmation: you receive confirmation once the puja is complete.
Astrologer’s insight from Arjun
“A puja works alongside the way you live. I always pair a Surya Puja with one or two simple daily practices, so the remedy becomes part of your routine rather than a one-off event.”
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to attend the Surya Puja?
No. It is performed in your name using your sankalpa, a long-established Vedic practice. A live video link can be arranged on request.
Is a Surya Puja right for me?
It depends on your chart. Arjun checks where the Sun sits, your current Dasha and the major transits before recommending it. A consultation is the best place to start if you’re unsure.
What else can I do alongside the puja?
Simple daily remedies help. See the Surya remedies guide for mantra, daan and lifestyle practices.

When Surya (Sun) is the pressure point
When Surya is weak or afflicted, people usually describe it as working hard without being seen: recognition goes to someone else, confidence dips and there is friction with bosses or a father figure. I treat it by strengthening the Sun's steadiness rather than chasing status.
What people tell me
- Career stagnation: "I work harder than anyone and still get overlooked."
- Clashes with managers, authority or your father.
- Low confidence and low energy, especially when decisions are due.
The traditional remedy
Surya Shanti Puja, with simple daily practice: offering water to the rising sun (Surya arghya), the Aditya Hridayam on Sundays, and wheat or jaggery as daan.
The Vastu zone to look at
East: keep east-facing windows clear and let in morning light. In Australia the sun rises in the east and swings through the north, so an open East and North-East wakes the home up.

Questions people ask about the Sun
What should I do if my Sun is weak or debilitated in my chart?
Start with the basics that steady Surya: wake before sunrise, offer water to the rising sun, and keep your word in small things. A weak Sun is about self-belief and visibility, so I also look at your 10th house and current Dasha before suggesting a Surya Shanti Puja or any gemstone.
Can a weak Sun hold back my career and recognition?
It can make recognition slower, especially in jobs with a strong hierarchy. It does not decide your career on its own. The 10th house, its lord and your Dasha timing matter just as much, and that is usually where the real answer is.
Does Sun with Rahu in the 10th house stop me from making a name for myself?
Sun with Rahu (a form of Grahan Yoga) often shows a restless, unconventional path to recognition rather than none at all. Many people with it do well in fields that reward independence. Remedies focus on calming Rahu's confusion so the Sun's clarity can show.
