Love Compatibility in Vedic Astrology
Love compatibility in Vedic astrology is assessed by comparing two birth charts – the partners’ Moon signs and Nakshatras (Guna Milan), their 7th houses, Venus and Mars – rather than by adding up the letters of their names. Can a Love Calculator Really Tell If We’re Compatible?
Name-based love calculators can be fun, but they aren’t astrology. Most combine the letters in two names using a formula and turn the result into a percentage. Change a spelling or use a nickname and the “compatibility” changes – yet nothing about the two people has changed. There is no classical Vedic principle behind these scores, so enjoy them as a game and don’t use them for real decisions about a relationship.
Genuine compatibility analysis starts with each person’s exact date, time and place of birth.
What Does Vedic Compatibility Analysis Look At?
1. Guna Milan (Ashtakoota)
The traditional matching system compares the partners’ Moon signs and Nakshatras across eight factors (kootas), worth 36 points in total:
- Varna (1 point) – temperament and outlook
- Vashya (2) – mutual attraction and influence
- Tara (3) – how each person’s birth star supports the other
- Yoni (4) – physical and instinctive compatibility
- Graha Maitri (5) – friendship between the Moon-sign rulers and mental rapport
- Gana (6) – basic nature: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa
- Bhakoot (7) – emotional connection and family welfare
- Nadi (8) – constitution and, traditionally, children
A score of 18 or more is traditionally considered acceptable. However, a high score doesn’t guarantee harmony and a lower score doesn’t doom a relationship – which is why I explain why Kundli matching alone doesn’t predict a happy marriage.
2. The 7th House
The 7th house governs committed partnership. I look at the sign on the 7th house, any planets placed there, the condition of its ruling planet, and the same house in the Navamsa (D9), the divisional chart most closely linked to marriage.
3. Venus (Shukra) and Jupiter (Guru)
Venus shows how you love, what attracts you and how you enjoy life together. Jupiter adds wisdom, goodwill and commitment. Their strength in both charts says a great deal about a relationship’s warmth and staying power.
4. Mangal Dosha
Mangal Dosha (being “Manglik”) occurs when Mars occupies certain houses counted from the Lagna, Moon or Venus. It’s one of the most feared factors in matching, yet it’s often overstated: there are many classical cancellations, and pairing two charts with similar Mars placements is a traditional solution. 5. Dasha Timing
The planetary periods (Dashas) that both partners are running show when a relationship is likely to feel supported or tested, and help with choosing the timing of commitments.

Love Compatibility FAQs
How many Gunas should match for a good marriage?
Traditionally, 18 out of 36 is the minimum acceptable score, and higher is considered better. But the number alone can mislead. Two charts can score well yet have weak 7th houses, or score modestly yet show strong mutual support. I always read the score alongside both full charts before drawing any conclusion.
Can we check compatibility without birth times?
A partial analysis is possible. If the Moon stayed in the same Nakshatra all day, Guna Milan can still be worked out from dates and places. But the 7th house, Lagna and Navamsa all depend on birth time, so without it the reading is less complete. I’ll tell you clearly what can and can’t be assessed.
Is Mangal Dosha a reason to end a relationship?
No. Mangal Dosha is common, is frequently cancelled by other factors in the chart, and should never be judged in isolation. It points to areas that need awareness – such as how a couple handles conflict and energy – rather than a fixed outcome. A careful reading of both charts gives a far more accurate picture.
Is Vedic compatibility only for arranged marriages?
Not at all. Couples who met on their own, in Australia or overseas, also use compatibility analysis to understand each other better. It’s useful at any stage – dating, engagement or years into a marriage – because it highlights strengths to build on and patterns to be mindful of.
