Kundli matching, also called horoscope matching or Kundli Milan, is the Vedic astrology practice of comparing two birth charts before marriage to assess compatibility, timing and potential friction. What does Kundli matching actually check?
The traditional starting point is Ashtakoota, also known as Guna Milan: eight factors (kootas) drawn from each person’s Moon sign and Nakshatra, scored out of 36 points. Together they look at temperament, attraction, health compatibility and the emotional wavelength between two people.
A score is only the beginning. I also check Manglik status (Mangal Dosha, a question of where Mars sits) and Kaal Sarp Dosha, cross-check the match with the KP system, and set out the Vimshottari Dasha periods for both partners.

What is a good Guna Milan score?
Traditionally, 18 out of 36 points is treated as the minimum acceptable match, and higher scores are seen as more favourable. But the score measures only Moon-based compatibility. A high score with difficult Dasha timing can be harder than a moderate score with strong 7th houses, so I never judge a match on the number alone.
How is Kundli matching different from compatibility apps?
Most apps compare Sun signs or generate an automatic Guna score, while a proper Kundli match is read by a person. I look at the factors behind the score: each koota, Manglik status, doshas and the Dasha periods each partner is running. That context is what turns a score into useful advice.
Does being Manglik mean we should not marry?
No. Mangal Dosha is common, and classical texts list many conditions that cancel or soften it, including when both partners are Manglik. It is one factor to weigh, not a verdict. Where Mars does need balancing, the report suggests remedies such as specific prayers or pujas that you can choose to follow.
Can Kundli matching promise a happy marriage?
No, and anyone who promises that is overselling. Matching highlights natural strengths, points of friction and periods that will need patience. What details do we need to provide?
The date, exact time and place of birth for both partners. Checkout asks for your details and your partner’s in separate sections; if either birth time is uncertain, mention it in the question box. Moon-based factors such as Guna Milan are fairly robust to small time errors, but house-based factors depend on an accurate birth time.
