Guru (Jupiter) Puja

The Guru Puja is a traditional Vedic ritual for Jupiter, performed in your name with a sankalpa from your birth details, Guru mantra japa and the offerings associated with Jupiter. In Vedic astrology Jupiter is linked with wisdom, teachers, children, faith, growth and, traditionally, marriage, so this puja is usually considered when Jupiter is under pressure in your chart.

When is a Guru Puja considered?

A Guru Puja is usually considered when your birth chart, current Dasha or a transit shows Jupiter under strain. Common indications include:

  • Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn or placed in the 6th, 8th or 12th house
  • Jupiter is joined by Rahu (Guru Chandal Yoga)
  • You are running a Guru Mahadasha that feels stalled

Arjun checks your chart first, because the same placement can be strong or weak depending on the rest of the chart. If a puja isn’t needed, he’ll tell you.

Guru at a glance

Guru’s traditional day is Thursday, its presiding deity is Lord Vishnu (Brihaspati), and its beej mantra is “Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah”. These are the classical associations a Guru Puja draws on:

How is the Guru Puja performed?

The puja is performed on your behalf, usually on a Thursday morning, so you don’t need to be present.

  1. Sankalpa: your full name, date, time and place of birth are used to set the ritual intention.
  2. Invocation: Lord Ganesha is invoked first, followed by Lord Vishnu (Brihaspati).
  3. Mantra japa: the Guru beej mantra is recited by the priests.
  4. Havan and offerings: a fire ritual with the traditional samagri and daan for Jupiter.
  5. Confirmation: you receive confirmation once the puja is complete.

Astrologer’s insight from Arjun

“A puja works alongside the way you live. I always pair a Guru Puja with one or two simple daily practices, so the remedy becomes part of your routine rather than a one-off event.”

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to attend the Guru Puja?

No. It is performed in your name using your sankalpa, a long-established Vedic practice. A live video link can be arranged on request.

Is a Guru Puja right for me?

It depends on your chart. Arjun checks where Jupiter sits, your current Dasha and the major transits before recommending it. A consultation is the best place to start if you’re unsure.

What else can I do alongside the puja?

Simple daily remedies help. See the Guru remedies guide for mantra, daan and lifestyle practices.

When Guru (Jupiter) is the pressure point

Guru brings growth, wisdom and blessings around marriage, children and wealth. When its promise seems delayed, people feel stuck: money plateaus, marriage talks stall or family plans take longer than expected. Remedies honour Jupiter and clear what is blocking it.

What people tell me

  • Marriage delays: "my Jupiter Mahadasha is running and nothing is happening."
  • Waiting longer than hoped to start a family.
  • Financial plateaus and a loss of direction or purpose.

The traditional remedy

Guru (Brihaspati) Shanti Puja, with Thursday practice: Om Gram Greem Groum Sah Gurave Namah, yellow foods or turmeric as daan, and respect for teachers and elders.

The Vastu zone to look at

North-East: the Ishan zone, Jupiter's direction and the water element. Declutter it completely, keep it light and use it for prayer or quiet reflection.

Questions people ask about Jupiter

Why didn't my marriage happen in Jupiter Mahadasha?

Jupiter Mahadasha supports marriage when Jupiter is linked to the 7th house or its lord, and when the sub-period (Antardasha) also points there. If the Antardasha planet is unrelated, the event may come later in the Mahadasha. Timing usually explains it.

Is Jupiter in the 5th house good for having children?

Traditionally Jupiter is the significator of children and is usually welcome in the 5th. Delays depend on the whole chart and timing. Questions about conceiving are also medical, so please speak with your GP or a fertility specialist as well.

Can a strong Jupiter delay marriage?

Sometimes. A strong Jupiter can bring high standards, study or spiritual focus that pushes marriage later. That is a different pattern from a blocked 7th house, and the remedies are different too.
