Ketu Mahadasha Feels Like Losing Everything. Here’s What It’s Really Doing
A job ends, a friendship quietly fades, and the goals you chased for years suddenly feel strangely hollow. If someone has told you that’s Ketu Mahadasha and the next seven years are a write-off, I’d like to give you a more accurate picture.
Ketu Mahadasha is the 7-year period ruled by Ketu, the south node of the Moon, in the Vimshottari Dasha system. It tends to strip away attachments, roles and plans you have outgrown, and turns your attention inward towards intuition, study and spiritual life. How gentle or demanding it feels depends on Ketu’s house, its sign lord and the planets joined with it in your own birth chart.
Below I explain when it starts, why it feels like loss, whether yours is likely to be easy or hard, what each sub-period brings and what helps.
What is Ketu Mahadasha, and when does it start?
In Vimshottari Dasha, Ketu rules 7 of the 120 years in the cycle. It always follows Mercury’s 17-year period and is always followed by Venus’s 20-year period.
Where you enter the cycle depends on the Nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth. If your Moon sits in Ashwini, Magha or Mula, the three Nakshatras ruled by Ketu, you were born into a Ketu Mahadasha, and part of it had already run before you were born. Everyone else meets Ketu later in life, or not at all within a normal lifespan. I explain how the whole sequence fits together in my article on why good and bad years follow the Dasha pattern, and why your Nakshatra matters so much in this guide to the Nakshatras.
One Australian point I’m asked about often: if you were born in India, Fiji, Sri Lanka or anywhere else and now live in Sydney or Perth, your Dasha dates are still calculated from your birthplace and local birth time. Moving countries doesn’t reset them. What does shift them is an inaccurate birth time, so if yours is a guess, read about birth time rectification first.
Why does Ketu Mahadasha feel like losing everything?
Ketu is the headless half of the eclipse demon in Hindu mythology, a body that acts without the ego’s wants. In a chart it represents detachment, past-life skill and Moksha, liberation, so its period loosens your grip on things the ego treats as identity.
That’s why the experience is so often described as loss. A role you defined yourself by ends. Ambition drops for no obvious reason. People who were central drift to the edges. Very little of this is random punishment. Ketu removes what no longer fits, and it tends to do it before you’ve consciously decided you’re done.
In my experience the people who struggle most keep trying to rebuild exactly what they had. Those who cope better treat it as a clearing and let new priorities take shape. For Australians living far from extended family, the sense of distance can feel sharper in a Ketu period. That’s Ketu’s nature, not a sign that something is wrong with you.
Is Ketu Mahadasha good or bad for you?
Neither, by default. Ketu doesn’t rule a sign the way the seven visible planets do, so it largely gives the results of the planet that rules the sign it sits in, the house it occupies and the planets joined with it.
These are the factors I check first in a chart:
- House from the Lagna. Like Rahu, Ketu is traditionally considered stronger in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses, where it can bring courage, the ability to overcome competition and gains. In the 12th it is classically linked with spiritual growth.
- Sign lord (dispositor). A well-placed, strong sign lord steadies Ketu. A weak or afflicted one makes its period more unsettled.
- Conjunctions. Ketu with Jupiter can sharpen wisdom and spiritual insight. Ketu with the Moon can bring emotional sensitivity and restlessness.
- The old principle “Kujavat Ketu”. Ketu is said to act like Mars, so its periods can feel sudden, sharp and decisive rather than slow.
- The Navamsa. Ketu’s position in the D9 shows whether the inner promise matches the outer one.
My article on why Rahu and Ketu are wrongly treated as “bad planets” goes deeper into how the nodes behave.

What does each sub-period (Antardasha) of Ketu Mahadasha bring?
Ketu Mahadasha is divided into nine sub-periods in a fixed order, starting with Ketu itself and ending with Mercury. Their lengths are set by the Vimshottari proportions, so the first sub-period is short and often the most intense.
| Sub-period | Approx. length | Common themes |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu–Ketu | 4 months 27 days | Sharpest sense of detachment; good for rest, not big decisions |
| Ketu–Venus | 1 year 2 months | Relationships, comfort and creativity return to focus |
| Ketu–Sun | 4 months 6 days | Questions of identity, authority and father |
| Ketu–Moon | 7 months | Emotional sensitivity, home and mother |
| Ketu–Mars | 4 months 27 days | High energy and quick action; avoid rash moves |
| Ketu–Rahu | 1 year 18 days | Both nodes active; restlessness and sudden changes |
| Ketu–Jupiter | 11 months 6 days | Teachers, study, faith and wiser choices |
| Ketu–Saturn | 1 year 1 month 9 days | Discipline, duty and steady, patient work |
| Ketu–Mercury | 11 months 27 days | Learning, analysis and preparing for the Venus period |
These are tendencies, not verdicts. Each sub-period also depends on how its own planet is placed in your chart.
What actually helps during Ketu Mahadasha?
The most useful remedies for Ketu are steady, humble practices rather than expensive ones: worship of Lord Ganesha, Ketu’s mantra, simple charity and a daily habit of quiet reflection.
- Lord Ganesha. Ketu’s presiding deity. Most Hindu temples in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth have a Ganesha shrine, and a short daily prayer at home works too.
- Ketu’s beej mantra. “Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah”, 108 times, traditionally on Tuesdays.
- Daan (charity). A blanket, sesame seeds, or food for animals, especially stray dogs, given without expectation.
- Meditation and journalling. Ketu rewards inner work, even ten quiet minutes a day.
- Declutter and simplify. Letting go on your own terms tends to feel far gentler than having things taken away.
The remedy I see misused most is cat’s eye (Lehsunia). It can intensify Ketu in either direction, so please don’t wear it on general advice. Get a personal chart check first. You’ll find the full traditional list on my Ketu remedies page, and details of the Ketu Shanti Puja for those who want a formal ritual.
One important note: if detachment turns into persistent low mood, poor sleep or loss of interest in daily life, please see your GP. Astrology can help you understand a period, but it is not a substitute for medical care.
What happens when Ketu Mahadasha ends?
Ketu Mahadasha always hands over to Venus Mahadasha, the longest period in the cycle at 20 years. The contrast can be striking: from simplification and inner work to relationships, comfort, beauty and enjoyment of the material world.
The space Ketu clears is often where the Venus years build. If you’re nearing the end of Ketu, read my article on what Venus Mahadasha really brings so you know what to prepare for.
Questions people ask about Ketu Mahadasha
How long does Ketu Mahadasha last?
Ketu Mahadasha lasts 7 years in the Vimshottari Dasha system. If you were born with the Moon in Ashwini, Magha or Mula, you started life in it, so the remaining portion at birth will be shorter.
How do I know if I’m in Ketu Mahadasha?
You need your Vedic birth chart, calculated in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, from your exact date, time and place of birth. The Dasha table will show the current Mahadasha and Antardasha with start and end dates.
Is Ketu Mahadasha bad for marriage?
Not automatically. Ketu can bring a sense of distance, so couples may need to talk more deliberately. Ketu’s link to your 7th house and Venus matters far more than the Dasha label.
Can Ketu Mahadasha bring money or success?
Yes, it can. Ketu in the 3rd, 6th or 11th house, or with a strong sign lord, can support gains, research, technical skill and success in competitive fields. It tends to reward focused, specialised work rather than showy ambition.
Should I wear cat’s eye during Ketu Mahadasha?
Only after a personal chart check. Cat’s eye strengthens Ketu, and if Ketu is badly placed for you that can magnify the restlessness you want to ease.
Why do I feel so detached during Ketu Mahadasha?
Detachment is Ketu’s core nature, so feeling less driven by things you used to want is common. Use it to reassess what truly matters. If the feeling becomes persistent sadness or affects daily functioning, speak to your GP.
