Manglik Dosha Remedies: What Actually Helps (and What's Myth)
By Arjun, Vedic Astrologer & Vastu Consultant, Sydney
The most helpful Manglik Dosha remedy is an accurate diagnosis. Manglik (Mangal) Dosha is often over-diagnosed, and classical texts list several cancellation (Parihara) conditions. Where a genuine dosha remains, sensible remedies include Mangal mantra, Tuesday Hanuman worship, Daan of red lentils, channelling Mars energy physically, and honest communication with your partner. No remedy should be sold through fear.
Few astrological labels cause as much worry in Indian families as ‘Manglik’. I regularly meet young people in Sydney who have been told, sometimes by an online calculator, that their marriage prospects are doomed. In most of these cases, a careful reading shows either no real dosha or a heavily cancelled one. This article focuses on remedies: what genuinely helps, what is tradition, and what is simply myth.
What is Manglik Dosha, briefly?
Manglik Dosha is traditionally judged when Mars (Mangal) occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. Mars represents energy, assertiveness, heat and conflict, so in houses linked with home and partnership it is thought to bring friction, impatience or strong temperament into married life.
I have covered the concept and its history in depth in what astrologers won’t tell you about Mangal Dosha. Here, we move straight to what you can do about it.
Why is Manglik Dosha so often over-diagnosed?
Because the rule is applied too mechanically. Some astrologers check the Mars position from the Lagna, the Moon and Venus, and count six different houses from each. Applied that way, a very large share of charts qualify by at least one method. Online tools add to the problem by flagging the dosha without checking any cancellation rule.
A proper assessment also weighs the strength of Mars, its aspects, the condition of the 7th house and its lord, and the Navamsa (D9). A Manglik label on its own tells you very little.
When is Manglik Dosha cancelled (Parihara)?
Classical and traditional sources describe several conditions under which the dosha is considered neutralised or greatly reduced. Commonly cited ones include:
- Mars in its own sign (Mesha or Vrishchika) or exalted (Makara).
- Jupiter’s influence – Mars conjunct or aspected by a strong Jupiter.
- Both partners Manglik – comparable Mars placements in both charts are traditionally seen as balancing each other.
- Specific sign-and-house combinations – various texts list placements where Mars in a given house and sign does not form the dosha. These lists differ between traditions, which is itself a reason not to panic.
- A strong 7th house and 7th lord, which can outweigh a Mars placement.
There is also a popular belief that the dosha fades after about age 28. That idea is widespread, but it is folk tradition rather than a firm classical rule, so I do not rely on it.
Which Manglik remedies actually help?
Where a real, uncancelled dosha exists, I suggest remedies that work on Mars’ qualities rather than on fear:
- Mantra: chant Om Angarakaya Namah or Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah regularly, especially on Tuesdays.
- Hanuman worship: reciting the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesdays is the most widely practised Mars remedy, and it builds calm discipline.
- Daan: donate red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth on Tuesdays to those in need.
- Physical outlet: Mars is energy. Regular sport, martial arts, gym work or even gardening gives it a healthy channel instead of letting it spill into arguments.
- Anger awareness: learning to pause before reacting is the most practical Mars remedy of all, and couples benefit directly.
- Structured puja: for families who want a formal ritual, a Mangal Dosha Nivaran Puja can be performed in your name.
- Red coral (Moonga): only if Mars is a functional benefic for your Lagna and the chart supports it. Wearing it blindly can intensify Mars.
What about Kumbh Vivah and other rituals?
Kumbh Vivah is a symbolic ritual in which a Manglik person is first ‘married’ to a clay pot, a peepal tree or an idol of Vishnu before the actual wedding. Some families find comfort in it as a cultural tradition, and there is no harm in a family choosing it willingly. It should never be pressed on anyone, and it is not a requirement for a good marriage.
Which Manglik beliefs are myths?
- ‘A Manglik will harm or outlive their spouse.’ This fear-based claim is not a responsible reading of any chart and causes real distress. I do not endorse it.
- ‘A Manglik can only marry a Manglik.’ Matching Mars is one cancellation route, not the only one.
- ‘An app result is final.’ Automated tools rarely check cancellation.
- ‘Expensive rituals are compulsory.’ Sincere, regular practice matters more than cost.
Compatibility also involves far more than one factor, as I explain in why Kundli matching doesn’t predict a happy marriage.
Key takeaways
- Accurate diagnosis is the first and most important Manglik remedy.
- Several Parihara conditions cancel or reduce the dosha, and many charts qualify for at least one.
- Mantra, Tuesday Hanuman worship, Daan and a physical outlet for Mars energy are practical remedies.
- Kumbh Vivah is an optional cultural ritual, never a necessity.
- Fear-based claims about harm to a spouse are not a responsible reading of the chart.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Yes. Many couples where only one partner is Manglik have stable, happy marriages. The overall compatibility of the charts, the strength of each person’s 7th house, the Navamsa and – above all – the maturity and communication of the couple matter far more. If a real dosha exists, sensible remedies and awareness can be part of the marriage rather than a barrier to it.
How do I know if my Manglik Dosha is cancelled?
An astrologer needs to check the sign Mars occupies, aspects from Jupiter, your partner’s Mars placement, the condition of the 7th house and lord, and the Navamsa chart. Because traditions differ on some cancellation lists, it is worth having the chart read by a person rather than relying on an automated calculator.
Does Manglik Dosha end at age 28?
This is a popular belief rather than a firm classical principle. Mars does tend to be associated with the energy of youth, and many people naturally become calmer with age. But I assess the dosha from the chart itself, including cancellations and Dasha periods, rather than applying a fixed age cut-off.
Is a Mangal Dosha puja necessary?
It is not compulsory. A puja is a structured way to focus intention and seek blessings, and some families value it. Daily practices such as mantra, Hanuman Chalisa, Daan and managing anger work on the same planet. I suggest a formal puja when the dosha is genuine and the family wants a ritual, never as a condition for marrying.
