How Accurate Is Vedic Astrology? How I Use Planetary Timing and Vastu Before Big Money Decisions
By Arjun — Vedic Astrologer & Vastu Consultant, Astro Research, Sydney

“How accurate are you?” is the question I hear most, and it deserves a straight answer. Vedic astrology does not hand out certainties. What it does well, when the birth details are right and the chart is read carefully, is show you the timing windows when a decision is well supported and when the same decision carries more risk. When you are about to commit to a mortgage, a commercial lease or a renovation, that difference in timing can be worth far more than the cost of a reading.
In this article I’ll show you exactly how I test a chart before I predict anything, which planetary positions I check before money decisions, how Vastu fits into property choices, and where a well-timed decision can save you thousands of dollars in avoidable mistakes.
How I Test a Chart Before I Predict Anything
The most honest measure of an astrologer’s accuracy is whether they can describe your past before they talk about your future. I insist on this step with every client.
Before I make a single forward-looking statement, I ask for three or four significant past events: a move of house, a change of job, a marriage or separation, the birth of a child. I then check whether each event falls where the chart says it should, inside the right Mahadasha and Antardasha (the planetary periods of the Vimshottari Dasha system) and alongside the right transits (Gochar).
If those past events line up, I know the birth time is reliable and the chart is “speaking”. If they don’t line up, the birth time is usually out by a few minutes, and the ascendant or house cusps may be wrong. In that case I rectify the chart first, or I tell you plainly that a precise prediction isn’t possible yet. I would rather say “not yet” than give you a confident forecast built on the wrong chart.
You can, and should, ask any astrologer to do this. It is the simplest way to separate careful work from guesswork.
The Planetary Positions I Check Before Any Money Decision
Money questions in Jyotish sit across five houses and a handful of slow-moving planets. These are the positions I look at first.
The Houses of Money, Property and Loss
The 2nd house shows savings and accumulated wealth, and the 11th shows gains and income. The 4th house governs land, homes and vehicles. On the other side of the ledger, the 8th house points to sudden events, debt and joint finances, and the 12th house shows expenses and outflows. When the Dasha running in your life belongs to the lord of the 6th, 8th or 12th house, I become more cautious about large, hard-to-reverse commitments.
Saturn, Jupiter and the Rahu–Ketu Axis
Saturn’s transit over the 4th house from your Moon (often called Kantaka Shani) and the seven-and-a-half-year Sade Sati period both deserve attention before a property purchase, because Saturn tends to test whatever you build during these phases. Jupiter’s transit over your 2nd, 5th, 9th or 11th house from the Moon is generally supportive for growth. The Rahu–Ketu axis falling across your 2nd and 8th houses is one I watch closely for impulsive spending and unexpected financial obligations.
Mercury for Contracts
Mercury rules contracts, paperwork and negotiation. I don’t treat Mercury retrograde as a curse, but I do suggest that clients read every clause twice, allow extra time for finance approval and avoid signing in a rush while it lasts.

Where Mistimed Decisions Get Expensive in Australia
Astro guidance saves money in one main way: it helps you slow down, check again, or choose a better moment before you commit to something that is costly to reverse.
Consider what is at stake. In New South Wales, transfer (stamp) duty on a typical Sydney home runs into tens of thousands of dollars (unless a first home buyer concession applies) and cannot be recovered if the purchase turns out to be the wrong one. Breaking a residential lease early usually means a break fee. A commercial lease often comes with a personal guarantee that outlives the business. And reversing a renovation because the layout never felt right can cost as much as the renovation itself.
Compared with any of these, a consultation is a small cost. Its value is not in “predicting the market” but in helping you see when your own chart supports a major commitment, and when it is asking you to wait, negotiate harder or get another professional opinion first.
Three Example Scenarios: How I Apply This in a Consultation
The scenarios below are illustrative examples that show how I combine planetary timing and Vastu. They are not individual client records.
Example Scenario 1
A First Home Purchase During Saturn’s Transit of the 4th House
A couple has found a home they love and wants to bid at auction in two weeks. In one partner’s chart, Saturn is transiting the 4th house from the Moon, and the Antardasha running is ruled by the 8th lord. The floor plan also shows a cut (missing section) in the north-east corner.
My advice in a case like this is not “don’t buy”. It is: do not let excitement set the price. Get a building and pest inspection, have the contract reviewed, set a firm bidding limit in advance, and if you proceed, choose a supportive muhurta for exchange. I would also map out which Vastu corrections the north-east cut needs before settlement, so there are no surprise costs later.
What this protects against: overpaying under pressure, and committing stamp duty and a mortgage to a home whose layout needs expensive changes you hadn’t budgeted for.
Example Scenario 2
A Five-Year Commercial Lease With Rahu on the 2nd House
A small-business owner is ready to sign a five-year lease with a personal guarantee. Rahu is transiting their 2nd house and the current Dasha belongs to the 12th lord, a combination I associate with outflows that are larger than expected.
Here I would suggest negotiating a shorter initial term with an option to renew, asking a solicitor to review the guarantee, and signing on a date when Mercury is direct and the Moon is well placed. The business idea may be sound. The aim is to keep the downside small while the chart is signalling caution.
What this protects against: being locked into years of rent and a personal guarantee during a period that favours flexibility over long commitments.
Example Scenario 3
A Kitchen Renovation Planned for the North-East
A family is about to renovate and the architect has moved the kitchen into the north-east corner. In Vastu, the north-east is the zone of water and clarity, while fire belongs in the south-east. Placing the stove and oven in the north-east is one of the combinations I most often see clients spend money correcting later.
Changing a plan on paper costs very little. Moving plumbing, gas and cabinetry after the work is finished costs a great deal. My advice is to review the kitchen direction with the architect now, and to start the work in a supportive planetary window.
What this protects against: paying twice, once to build the kitchen and again to move it.

Money Decisions at a Glance
This is the quick reference I share with clients before a major financial step.
| Decision | What I Check in the Chart | Practical Step |
|---|---|---|
| Buying a home | 4th house, Saturn and Jupiter transits, current Dasha | Inspection, firm budget, muhurta for exchange |
| Signing a lease or contract | Mercury’s condition, 7th and 8th houses | Legal review, exit clauses, avoid rushed signing |
| Starting a business | 10th and 11th houses, Dasha lord’s strength | Start lean, launch in a supportive window |
| Renovating | 4th house, Mars and Saturn transits | Vastu review of plans before work begins |
| Large investment | 2nd, 8th and 11th houses, Rahu–Ketu axis | Licensed financial advice, stage the commitment |
Astrologer’s Insight: The most useful thing a chart does before a money decision is not to say “yes” or “no”. It tells you how much margin for error you have. In a supportive period, a small misjudgement is easily absorbed. In a testing one, the same misjudgement costs more, so I ask clients to build in extra checks, more time and a smaller initial commitment. You can read more about how these periods unfold in my guide to the Dasha system.
What Astro Guidance Can’t Do
Astrology and Vastu are tools for timing and perspective. They do not replace a licensed financial adviser, a mortgage broker, a solicitor or a building inspector, and no honest astrologer can guarantee a particular outcome. What I can offer is a clear view of your planetary periods, the timing windows that support your plans, and the Vastu considerations for the property in front of you. Used together with sound professional advice, that combination helps you make fewer expensive mistakes.
Frequently Asked Questions About Astrology and Money Decisions
➕ How can I check whether an astrologer is accurate?
Ask them to describe the timing of three or four major past events from your birth details before they make any prediction. If the past doesn’t line up with the chart, the birth time or the reading needs work, and any forecast built on it should be treated with caution.
➕ Can astrology tell me whether property prices will rise?
No. I don’t predict markets. A chart shows how well your own planetary periods support a major commitment, so you can decide how cautious to be and when to act. Market questions belong with a qualified property or financial professional.
➕ What birth details do you need?
Your date of birth, the most accurate birth time you can find (a birth certificate or hospital record is ideal) and your place of birth. If the time is uncertain, I can check it against past events before giving any timing advice.
➕ Should I book before or after I find a property?
Ideally both. A reading before you start searching shows which months are supportive for a purchase. Once you have a shortlist, a Vastu review of the floor plans helps you compare properties and budget for any corrections before you commit.
