# West-Facing House Vastu in Australia: Is It Good, and Where Should the Door Go?

_By [Arjun](https://astroresearch.com.au/astrologer/) — Australia’s best Vedic astrologer and Vastu consultant, Astro Research, Sydney_

You find a home you love, then notice the front door faces west and someone warns you that west-facing houses are bad in Vastu. Before you cross it off your list, it helps to know what Vastu actually says.

**A west-facing house is not bad in Vastu. Like every facing, it depends on where the main door sits along the west wall, how the rooms are arranged and whether the South-West corner is strong. In Australia a west-facing front also means a sunny morning-facing back, and simple shading on the west side makes these homes comfortable and well balanced.**

Below I explain what the West represents, where the front door should go, how to lay out the rooms, how to handle the hot afternoon sun and the simple fixes I suggest when the layout isn’t ideal.

A west-facing entrance catches the warm afternoon light, which a few smart choices turn into an advantage.

## Is a west-facing house good or bad in Vastu?

**West-facing homes can be very good in Vastu. Classical texts do not reject any facing; they judge the position of the entrance and the balance of the whole plan.**

The West is guarded by Varuna, the deity of water and rain, and is linked with Saturn, the planet of steady effort and results that build over time. Traditionally, a well-planned west-facing home is said to support stability, persistence and gains that come through hard work. Problems arise when the entrance sits in an unfavourable segment or the South-West is open and weak, not simply because the front faces west.

## Where should the main door be on a west-facing house?

**Place the main door in the middle part of the west wall and avoid the far South-West end. Measure the facing with true north before you decide.**

In the 32-segment (pada) system, the west wall is divided into eight entrance segments between the South-West and North-West corners. The middle segments, traditionally named Sugriva, Pushpadanta and Varuna, are considered favourable for the main door, while those towards the South-West corner are usually avoided. Traditions number the segments slightly differently, so I always mark the door on the actual floor plan. In Sydney a phone compass can be around 12 degrees out unless it is set to true north, which is enough to move a door into a different segment. My [Vastu compass guide](https://astroresearch.com.au/vastu-compass-australia/) shows how to line up the directions.

**Not sure which segment your door is in?** Send me your floor plan in a [Vastu consultation](https://astroresearch.com.au/vastu-services/) and I will mark it for you.

## How should I lay out a west-facing home?

**Keep the South-West heavy and private, the North-East open and light, and the kitchen in the South-East, just as for any facing.**

- **South-West:** the main bedroom and heavy wardrobes. Avoid a door, toilet or open courtyard in this corner. My [South-West corner guide](https://astroresearch.com.au/south-west-corner-vastu-guide/) explains why this zone matters most.
- **South-East:** the kitchen and cooktop. The [kitchen Vastu guide](https://astroresearch.com.au/kitchen-vastu-direction-guide/) covers stove and sink placement.
- **North-East (usually towards the back of the home):** a prayer space, study or calm living area, kept uncluttered and light.
- **West (the street side):** children’s bedrooms, a study or a dining room work well here.
- **North-West:** a guest room, laundry or garage access.
- **Centre (Brahmasthan):** keep it open, with no heavy columns or storage.

## How do I handle the hot afternoon sun on a west-facing home?

**In Australia the west side takes the harsh afternoon sun, especially in summer. Shading the west with a verandah, deep eaves, external blinds or trees keeps the home cool, and it also suits Vastu, which prefers the West to be more solid and protected than the East.**

The good news is that the back of a west-facing home faces east, so the rear rooms get gentle morning light. Where the block allows, put the main living areas towards the north and north-east for winter sun, and keep large west-facing glass to a minimum or well shaded.

A shaded verandah softens the western sun and gives the front of the home a welcoming, solid feel.

## Simple fixes when the door is towards the South-West

**Most west-facing homes can be balanced without moving the door. The aim is to make the entrance bright and well defined and to strengthen the South-West.**

- Keep the entry clean, well lit and free of clutter, shoes and broken items.
- Mark the threshold clearly with a raised sill or a metal threshold strip.
- Add weight to the South-West of the block with solid planting, a low wall or heavier outdoor furniture.
- Keep the main bedroom and heavier furniture in the South-West rooms.
- Keep the North-East corner open, clean and light to balance the plan.

## Questions people ask about west-facing houses

### Should I avoid buying a west-facing house?

No. Judge the door position, the South-West corner and the overall layout instead of the facing alone. Many west-facing homes have excellent Vastu.

### Is a west-facing house good for business owners?

Traditionally the West is linked with steady effort and long-term gains, which is why it is often considered suitable for people running their own business. The individual birth chart matters too, which I check in a consultation.

### Is a north-west facing house the same as a west-facing house?

No. A home facing north-west sits on the diagonal and needs its own assessment. Measure the exact angle before applying west-facing advice.

### What colour should the front door be on a west-facing house?

White, cream, light grey and soft blue suit the West in Vastu. Keep the door in good repair and well lit, which matters more than the exact shade.

### Do the Vastu directions change in the Southern Hemisphere?

No. Vastu uses true compass directions everywhere. What changes in Australia is the sun’s path, which sits in the northern sky, so the North is the warm side of the home.

### Can I fix a west-facing apartment?

Yes. In an apartment the door of your unit matters more than the building’s facing. My [apartment Vastu guide](https://astroresearch.com.au/apartment-vastu-sydney-corrections-guide/) explains what you can still control.
