# South-Facing House Vastu in Australia: Myths, Facts and Simple Fixes

_By [Arjun](https://astroresearch.com.au/astrologer/) — Australia’s best Vedic astrologer and Vastu consultant, Astro Research, Sydney_

Many buyers walk away from a home they love because someone told them a south-facing house is bad luck in Vastu. Before you do the same, here is what Vastu actually says.

**A south-facing house is not bad in Vastu. What matters is where the front door sits along the south side, how the rooms are arranged and whether the South-West is kept heavy and closed. In Australia, a south-facing front usually means a north-facing back, which gives you the warm, light living areas that Vastu and good design both favour.**

The bad-luck advice is usually incomplete. Below I walk through how I assess a south-facing home in a consultation: where the myth comes from, how to measure the facing, where the door should sit, how to lay out the rooms and what to do if the layout isn’t ideal.

A bright, well-kept entrance matters more in Vastu than the direction the house faces.

## Is a south-facing house bad according to Vastu?

**No. Classical Vastu does not reject any facing. It divides each side of the plot into segments and treats some as favourable entrances and others as ones to avoid. A south-facing home with its door in a favourable segment can be just as supportive as an east-facing one.**

The fear comes from the South being the direction of Yama, associated with endings and discipline. Yama is also the guardian of order and endurance, and the South is the direction Vastu wants solid and well built. Problems arise when the South, and especially the South-West, is left open, low or cut away, not simply because the front of the house faces that way.

## What does south-facing actually mean?

**A house is south-facing when you look south as you stand at the front door and face the street. Measure it with true north, not magnetic north, because a phone compass in Sydney or Melbourne can be around 12 degrees out.**

Many homes are not square to the compass. A house facing south-south-east behaves differently from one facing south-south-west, so I always mark the exact angle on the floor plan. My [interactive Vastu compass](https://astroresearch.com.au/vastu-compass-australia/) shows each of the eight directions and how to line them up with your plan.

## Where should the front door be on a south-facing house?

**Place the main door in the eastern half of the south wall, towards the South-East side of the centre, and avoid the far South-West end.**

In the 32-segment (pada) system used by many Vastu practitioners, the south wall is divided into eight entrance segments running from the South-East corner to the South-West corner. The segments in the eastern half, traditionally named Pusha, Vitatha and Grihakshata, are considered favourable. Those towards the South-West end are the ones to avoid. Because traditions number the segments slightly differently, I measure each door on the actual plan rather than relying on a rule of thumb.

**Not sure which segment your door falls in?** Send me your floor plan in a [Vastu consultation](https://astroresearch.com.au/vastu-services/) and I will mark the exact segment for you.

The 16 Vastu zones. On a south-facing home the entrance sits along the bottom of this compass.

## Why south-facing homes often suit Australian living

**In the Southern Hemisphere the sun travels through the northern sky. A south-facing home therefore has its back to the north, so the living areas, backyard and outdoor entertaining space get the winter sun.**

That lines up neatly with Vastu, which wants the North and North-East light, open and active. Many Australian buyers actively look for a north-facing backyard for exactly this reason. The street side to the south stays cooler and more shaded, which suits bedrooms, the garage and storage.

With the street to the south, the living areas at the back of the home catch the northern sun all year.

## How to lay out the rooms in a south-facing home

**Keep the South-West heavy and private, the North and North-East open and bright, and the kitchen in the South-East.**

- **South-West:** the main bedroom, heavy wardrobes or a study for the head of the household. Avoid a door, toilet or open patio in this corner.
- **South-East:** the kitchen and cooktop, or the electrical and solar equipment.
- **North and North-East (usually the back of the house):** family living, dining and glass doors to the garden. Keep this side uncluttered.
- **North-West:** guest room, laundry or garage access.
- **Centre (Brahmasthan):** keep it open, with no heavy columns or storage.

## Simple corrections when the door is in the South-West

**If the entrance falls towards the South-West, most homes can be balanced without moving the door. The aim is to make the threshold feel defined, bright and well kept, and to strengthen the rest of the plan.**

- Keep the entry well lit and spotless, with nothing broken or piled up at the door.
- Mark the threshold clearly with a raised sill or a metal threshold strip.
- Use the front garden: solid planting or a low wall on the south-west side gives that corner weight.
- Keep the main bedroom and heavier furniture in the South-West rooms inside.
- Keep the North-East corner of the house open and light to balance the plan.

## Buying a south-facing home: what to check at the inspection

- The exact facing angle, measured with a compass app set to true north.
- Which part of the south wall the front door sits in.
- Whether the South-West corner is solid, or cut away by a carport or porch.
- Where the kitchen, main bedroom and toilets fall.
- How much northern light reaches the living areas at the back.

My [12-point Vastu checklist for buying a home](https://astroresearch.com.au/vastu-checklist-buying-home-sydney/) covers the rest of the inspection.

## Questions buyers ask about south-facing homes

### Should I avoid buying a south-facing house?

No. Judge the entrance position, the South-West corner and the overall layout instead. Many south-facing homes in Australia have excellent Vastu because their living areas face north.

### Which direction is best for a house in Vastu?

East- and north-facing homes are traditionally preferred, east for the morning sun and north as the direction of Kubera, but Vastu does not rule out any facing. A south- or west-facing home with its door in a favourable segment and a strong South-West can be just as supportive.

### The house I want faces south-west. Should I walk away?

Not automatically. Measure the exact angle first: many homes described as south-west facing are closer to south. Then check which segment the door sits in and whether the South-West corner is solid. Many entrances can be balanced with the corrections above, so have the plan checked before you decide either way.

### Will a south-facing house be harder to resell?

Some buyers who follow Vastu do ask about facing, so it helps to know your home’s strengths: a well-placed entrance, a solid South-West and a bright North-East are easy to explain. In Australia a north-facing backyard and living area is often a selling point in its own right, and that is exactly what most south-facing homes have.

### Is a south-west facing house the same as a south-facing house?

No. A home that faces south-west has its front on the diagonal, and the entrance often lands in the South-West corner, which needs more care. Measure the exact angle before deciding.

### Can a south-facing apartment have good Vastu?

Yes. In an apartment the entry door of your unit matters more than the building’s facing. My [apartment Vastu guide](https://astroresearch.com.au/apartment-vastu-sydney-corrections-guide/) explains what you can still control in a unit.

### Should Vastu rules be reversed in the Southern Hemisphere?

No. Some practitioners mirror the rules for Australia, but Vastu’s directions are compass directions, and the compass does not flip south of the equator. What changes is the sun’s path, which sits in the northern sky here, so the North is the warm, bright side of the home. I keep the classical directions and adjust only the advice that depends on sunlight.
