Festival dates

## When are Karwa Chauth, Dhanteras, Choti Diwali and Diwali in 2026?

**In Australia, Karwa Chauth falls on Thursday 29 October 2026, Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Choti Diwali (Naraka Chaturdashi) on Saturday 7 November and Diwali Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November.** The dates match India, but the puja windows don’t: every Muhurat depends on your own city’s sunset, moonrise and rising sign. One detail catches many families: this year the Choti Diwali oil bath (Abhyang Snan) is taken before sunrise on Sunday 8 November, the morning of Diwali, because Chaturdashi begins on Saturday afternoon.

Timings by city

## What time is Lakshmi Puja on Diwali 2026 in your Australian city?

**On Sunday 8 November 2026 the Lakshmi Puja window opens at 8:04 pm in Sydney, 8:38 pm in Melbourne, 6:46 pm in Brisbane and 7:23 pm in Perth, each in local time.** That is a two-hour spread on the same night, caused by differences in sunset, latitude and daylight saving. Brisbane, Darwin and Perth don’t observe daylight saving, so a time converted from Sydney is wrong there by an hour or more.

Indicative windows for each city centre, local time.

Why timing matters

## Why can’t you use a Muhurat timetable from India?

**A timetable made for India uses Indian sunset, moonrise and rising-sign times, so it is wrong for every Australian city.** In Vedic tradition a pooja joins your devotion to the movement of the planets: Tithis change partway through the day and the Lagna changes with latitude and longitude. A forwarded WhatsApp timetable, usually made for New Delhi, misses your true Shubh Muhurat.

### A forwarded timetable

- One time for everyone, usually New Delhi
- Ignores your local sunset, so Pradosh Kaal is wrong
- No Lagna, so no Sthir Lagna window
- Silent on daylight saving in Brisbane, Perth and Darwin

### Your AstroResearch guide

- Calculated for your city by a qualified Vedic Pandit
- Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Lagna checked for each ritual
- Separate windows for each step: Sankalpa, Yama Deepam, Chandra Arghya, aarti
- Comes with the full Samagri checklist and a search guide

### True Sthir Lagna precision

On Dhanteras and Diwali, wealth rituals are traditionally performed while Vrishabha, a fixed sign, rises inside Pradosh Kaal, inviting prosperity that stays. Your guide shows exactly when the two overlap where you live.

### No last-minute Samagri stress

Nothing breaks your focus like realising mid-pooja that the Kamalgatta, the kheel-batashe or the karwa lid is missing. Each checklist is categorised and printable, so your altar is ready days ahead.

### Performed by a qualified Pandit

You don’t need priestly training. A qualified Pandit performs your pooja online with the proper rituals, and you follow the mantras and steps at home, at your exact Muhurat.

How it works

## How does booking your pooja online work?

- 2

### Gather your pooja items

The full list of pooja items is in the FAQs below and in your email. Items are grouped by altar, lamps, offerings and naivedya, so shopping takes one trip.

- 3

### The Pandit performs, you join from home

At your Muhurat, a qualified Pandit performs the pooja online with the proper rituals and mantras, and you follow each step at home, so your pooja begins at the right moment.

Who prepares your guide

## Who calculates your Muhurat?

**Your Muhurat is calculated by a qualified Vedic Pandit working with AstroResearch, the Sydney-based Vedic astrology and Vastu practice led by Arjun.** Each guide is prepared individually from the city and tradition you give at booking, using the five limbs of the Panchang: Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Lagna.

Questions

## Frequently asked questions

**When is Diwali 2026 in Australia?**

Diwali Lakshmi Puja 2026 is on Sunday 8 November in Australia, the same date as in India. The five-day festival runs from Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, through Choti Diwali on Saturday 7 November, to Diwali on Sunday 8 November.

**What time is Lakshmi Puja in Sydney on Diwali 2026?**

The published Lakshmi Puja window for Sydney is 8:04 pm to 9:33 pm AEDT on Sunday 8 November 2026, inside Pradosh Kaal (7:29 pm to 9:33 pm). Your guide is calculated for your own suburb.

**When is Karwa Chauth 2026 in Australia?**

Karwa Chauth 2026 is on Thursday 29 October in Australia. Moonrise is late this year: about 11:09 pm in Sydney, 11:49 pm in Melbourne, 11:22 pm in Canberra, 11:35 pm in Adelaide, 9:41 pm in Brisbane, 10:05 pm in Darwin and 10:30 pm in Perth, and just after midnight in Hobart. Your guide gives the moonrise for your own suburb rather than an Indian time.

**How is this different from the timings shared on social media?**

Most shared timetables give one window, usually for New Delhi, without your local sunset, rising sign or daylight saving. Your guide is calculated for your city using Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana and Lagna, so each ritual meets its traditional window where you live.

**Does a Pandit perform the pooja, or does my family do it?**

Both. A qualified, experienced Vedic Pandit performs your pooja online with the proper rituals, mantras and your Sankalpa, and your family takes part at home at the Muhurat calculated for your city, following the same mantras and steps.

**What pooja items (samagri) do I need?**

Karwa Chauth: a karwa with lid, chhalni (sieve), puja thali, diya with ghee, roli, akshat, kalava, flowers, coins, sweets and your Sargi items. Dhanteras: 13 earthen diyas plus a four-faced diya for Yama Deepam, a kalash, images of Lakshmi, Kubera and Dhanvantari, whole coriander seeds, coins, panchamrit and a new ledger. Choti Diwali: sesame oil and ubtan for Abhyang Snan, 14 diyas plus a four-wick diya, rangoli, an image of Lord Krishna, roli, akshat and sweets. Diwali: new Lakshmi and Ganesha idols, a kalash, an akhand diya with 11 or 21 diyas, kamalgatta, durva grass, kheel-batashe, silver coins, panchamrit and a new account book. Each pooja’s booking page lists every item in its FAQs.

**Are pooja items shipped to me?**

No. The full list of pooja items for each festival is in these FAQs and on each pooja’s booking page, so you can buy fresh items locally from an Indian grocer or online a few days before each festival.

**How does the online search guide work?**

For each step of the pooja you get the exact phrase to search, such as “Karwa Chauth vrat katha Veeravati” or “Shri Suktam path”, in the order you need them, plus tips for choosing reliable sources. Online videos usually quote Indian times, so you use your own Muhurat instead.

**When do I need to book?**

As early as you can. Each pooja has to be performed inside the festival’s Muhurat, so our Pandit can take only a limited number of families for Karwa Chauth, Dhanteras, Choti Diwali and Diwali. Once the slots for a festival are filled, bookings close.
